Dear Liza is an upcoming comedy short inspired by the classic song, “There’s a Hole in the Bucket.”

Dear Liza will be full of charm and laughs with a hint of romance and bathed in glorious Hallmark style afternoon light.

The Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for Dear Liza is live until 2/23/2022. You can see our progress by clicking here.

We’re off to a great start and received 54% of the funding on the first day! Seems like there’s a lotta love out there for this old leaky bucket!

We can still use your support! Extra funds go toward: hiring additional crew, greater flexibility with the location, a rainy day fund and film festival submissions. All perks are still available!

HOW IT STARTED
During the pandemic my primary mode of transportation has been a bicycle and when I ride, I often talk to myself.  As I'm riding around this last summer, an old song from my childhood, "There's a Hole in the Bucket," kept popping into my head and I found myself talking my way through the song, as if it were a script or a sketch comedy bit.

Hoping that I could exorcise it from my mind, I wrote the script out  --  Enough was enough and the song is mildly annoying in the first place  --  As I wrote, I began to find jokes between the established comic beats, I could hear the rhythm and visualize how I wanted it rehearsed and shot.

History of the song

The song “There’s a Hole in the Bucket” has been around for ages, making its first official appearance in a collection of German songs around 1700, called Little Mountain Songbook, “Bergliederbüchlein

It changed over time and the characters Henry and Liza first appeared in 1858 as Heinrich and Liese with the title “Wenn der Topf aber nun ein Loch hat,” which translates to, "but if the bucket now has a hole.”

It’s unclear when we get the English version we have now, but there was a famous English parody in 1953 called “There’s a Hole in the Budget,” which satirized Winston Churchill’s fiscal leadership.

HITB’s biggest cultural splash came when was covered by Harry Belafonte and Odetta at Carnegie Hall, reaching No. 32 in the UK Singles Chart in September 1961.

Other famous versions feature Dean Martin on the Dean Martin Show in 1966 as well as Jim Henson and Rita Moreno who performed it on Sesame Street in 1973.
